Vapour Phase Decontamination is based on the preparation of a system or plant for subsequent maintenance activities and hot work within the circuits and equipment, ensuring safety and eliminating risks.
Basically, vapour phase decontamination consists of the removal of the following parameters present within industrial systems:
- LEL (Lower Explosive Limit): To eliminate the risk of explosions during hot work activities within the facility, such as cutting, welding, etc.
- Pyrophorics: To minimise the risk of ignition in oxygen-rich environments, deflagrations, and related hazards in any area where sparks may be generated during hot work activities.
- H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide): Removal of this substance to ensure breathable environments without risks, allowing work inside the facilities without the need for SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus).
- Benzene: Similar to hydrogen sulphide, these compounds are removed from the internal atmospheres of the facilities to enable safe work without the need for breathable air equipment.

What Does Vapour Phase Decontamination Involve?
Using Medium-Pressure Steam from the Plant, the Entire System is Simultaneously Heated
The system is heated to a temperature above 110ºC, which is optimal for the vaporisation of the chemical products employed. At this point, an equal mixture of two biodegradable chemical agents is introduced:
One agent neutralises pyrophoric materials and explosive atmospheres.
The other eliminates benzene and hydrogen sulphide (H2S).
This process ensures the effective and safe decontamination of the system, preparing it for subsequent maintenance or operational tasks.
Prior to Setting Up Vapour Phase Decontamination, Injection Points Are Determined
Injection points are established based on the dimensions of the system. The most critical points are large hollow equipment, which may require multiple steam injections. At most steam injection points, a T-shaped system is installed to facilitate the addition of chemical products, as illustrated in the following image.
Technical Aspects of Vapour Phase Decontamination
At venting points, measurement equipment is installed to ensure the complete removal of the targeted contaminants. These instruments monitor the concentration of parameters being decontaminated until levels reach 0 ppm or the specific target concentration requested by the client at each point.
Once the desired concentration is achieved, steam without chemical additives is continued to be injected. This step ensures the removal of any residual traces of the chemical products, resulting in a condensate free from contamination.
It is important to note that the chemical product used for vapour phase decontamination is biodegradable and does not interfere with the wastewater treatment process following the cleaning operation.
