Pickling
and passivation
Pickling is a metal surface treatment used to eliminate impurities such as stains, inorganic contaminants and rust from ferrous metal alloys, copper and aluminium. A chemical solution that usually contains strong acids is used to remove surface impurities.
Passivation is the formation of a relatively inert film on the surface of a metal, which masks it from the action of external agents. Even though the reaction between the metal and the external agent is thermodynamically feasible at the macroscopic level, the passivating layer or film does not allow that interaction, such that a chemical or electrochemical reaction is reduced or completely prevented.
Performing the passivation treatment allows us to protect a surface and prevent the premature onset of rust until a product is once again placed in a container (for example, a tank).
These treatments are usually linked to the degreasing process in the case of organic products and if the base metal of the equipment is rusted. Depending on the base metal, the type of acid used is adjusted to ensure maximum effectiveness without causing damage. We can treat the following materials:

Corrosion inhibitors are included in this stage, which prevent the equipment from deteriorating. At the same time, the chemical solution is periodically checked to evaluate the condition of the acid and the base metal. With this information, the process can be adapted and controlled accurately and dynamically.
