What is an ATEX zone?

April 2023

An ATEX zone is a zone where there is a risk of explosion due to the presence of potentially explosive atmospheres. The word Atex comes from the words Explosive Atmosphere.

The zones are divided into three types, based on the probability and frequency of the presence of explosive atmospheres:

•Zone 0: An ATEX Zone 0 is an area where the presence of flammable gases, vapours or mists is continuous and long-lasting. The explosion hazard level of zone 0 is extremely high.

•Zone 1: A zone where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur under normal operating conditions. The risk is reduced compared to zone 0 but security measures are still essential.

• Zone 2: An area where an explosive atmosphere is possible but unlikely. The possible presence would be due to leaks or equipment defects, if any.

There is another type of classification in which the zones are differentiated between ATEX 20, ATEX 21 and ATEX 22. The methodology of classification is the same as above, except that in this case the explosive hazard would derive from the presence of combustible dusts rather than gases or vapours.

Associated hazards in our work in ATEX zones

Cleaning works in areas with an explosive atmosphere 0 can be extremely dangerous if the necessary safety measures and precautions are not taken.

The concentration of flammable substances is so high that the mere generation of a spark or a small heat source can trigger an explosion.

LAGUPRES operators wear specific and appropriate protective clothing and equipment to prevent the build-up of static charges and minimise the risk of ignition.

ATEX Zone Cleaning. Equipment and Resources Needed

LAGUPRES equipment intended for use in areas with explosive atmospheres meets special design and construction requirements to ensure that it is not a source of ignition for an explosive atmosphere. We have ATEX certifications for all the equipment we use for work in explosive atmospheres.

In order to work safely, all equipment (electrical, mechanical, etc.) is designed in such a way as to avoid the generation of sparks or heat sources, which could lead to an explosion.

In addition, LAGUPRES employees receive specific and continuous technical training for work in ATEX zones.

Industrial Cleaning of Areas with Explosive Atmospheres

At Lagupres, we have ATEX-certified equipment to carry out all types of cleaning work in areas classified as Zone 0.
